title_shape_1Steps to get your Driver's License issued

Fill out the DOL Pre-Application with the DOL (Free). Be prepared to log in when you come to Driving 101 to take your Knowledge Exam.

​If you have any of the following WA documents make sure to say YES you have a WA Driving Record: DOL #, ID Card, Permit, License, or have had a ticket in WA state. When you log in use the exact name birthday and address that is shown on your Washington state ID.

If you have never done anything with the DOL say no you do not have a driving record.

The DOL Written/Knowledge Exam tests your understanding of traffic laws and safe driving practices, required for obtaining a learner’s permit or driver’s license.

$40 for first attempt | $35 for all additional attempts | $25 for Driving 101 Students

  1. The Knowledge test is used to ensure you understand road signs, traffic laws, and safe-driving practices before you drive on the roadways. The knowledge test is your first step in getting your driver license.
  2. Everything you must learn to pass the test is in the Driver’s guide. It is a multiple-choice test with 40 questions, and you must correctly answer 32 of them to pass the test. A passing test score is good for two years.

Knowledge Exams are offered in thirteen different languages: Arabic, Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, English, Japanese, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, Tagalog, Ukrainian, Vietnamese

Congratulations on passing your Knowledge Exam! Here’s what you can do next:

Get Your WA Permit – Visit the DOL to have your Washington State Learner’s Permit issued.

Take Your Skills Exam – If you’ve completed a driver education course, you can schedule your Skills Exam to earn your Driver’s License.

Skip Driver’s Ed (If You’re 18+) – If you’re 18 or older and confident in your driving skills, you can go straight to scheduling your Skills Exam to get your Driver’s License. Take the next step towards hitting the road with confidence!

3. Get your permit issued through the DOL

3A. GET YOUR NON-PHOTO PERMIT ONLINE

Under 18 years old,Non photo permit

  • “Get your Instruction Permit” Complete the process and confirm your information is correct.
  • Parent or guardian information must match exactly as reflected on their driver record.
  • Pay the DOL $25 for a permit fee Go back to the home screen of the account, and it will now say “View temporary documents”, click it and print your permit

3B. GET YOUR PHOTO PERMIT

Go to the DOL to get your WA Permit issued

The driving test measures your ability to drive legally and safely. An examiner rides with you to evaluate your driving. They won’t try to confuse, trick, or ask you to do anything illegal.

$65 for each attempt | $40 for Driving 101 Students

Eligibility Criteria for Skill Exam

Passing the Knowledge and Skills Exams does not guarantee a driver’s license. The Department of Licensing will determine if all licensing requirements have been met.

      $40 for the Knowledge exam. You can come anytime Monday- Friday 10-4.
      $65 for the Skills Exam

      You can take the knowledge exam at Driving 101 anytime M-F 10-4. No appointment is needed. Once you pass the knowledge exam, we can schedule your skills exam.

      Come take the Knowledge exam at Driving 101, which is offered on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

      Go to the DOL to have a permit issued.

      If you are under 18, you must complete a driver's education course, have 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice, take and pass the state knowledge test, and pass the state drive exam.

      If you are over 18, you will need to take the Knowledge test and Drive exam. Driver education is optional. [But highly recommended.]

      A photo ID with a name, date of birth, and a photo.
